The "Sunday Sermon Online" is a brand new feature of the Tyrone Covenant Presbyterian Church website. Here is an overview for those of you that are interested in listening to the Sunday morning  service.

Please note that the audio file will download to your computer.  You will need some type of MP3 audio playing software to listen to the file [i.e. Microsoft Windows Media Player]. The files will only contain the Pastor's message and will not contain special music or hymns.

Note that the sermons should be approximately 25 minutes in length and the download file size will be approximately 5 meg. For those wishing to download into a folder on your hard drive, you can use your mouse to right click on the file name and chose the "Save target as"...and chose a location on your hard drive. Then you can listen to the message when you are off line.

Sermon Notes:

Job 3:23-26 & I Peter 4:12-13

Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you.  But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.  1 Peter 4:12-13

I.          Why did God Allow This?

Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?  For sighing comes to me instead of food; my groans pour out like water.

II.        What I Feared Has Come

What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me.

 III.             Longing for Peace

I have no peace, no quietness; I have no rest, but only turmoil.

The Blessing of God in the Sufferings of Life (Part 2)

Sermon Notes:

Job 2

His wife said to him, “Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!”  He replied, “You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”  In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

The purpose of life is not to avoid pain and suffering, but to see the hand of God in everything, and to glorify Him in all that comes your way.  Pain and suffering have at least five redemptive purposes which we’ll be going over this Spring:

  1. Suffering shatters our illusion of self-sufficiency.
  2. Suffering causes us to look beyond this world and to seek God more earnestly.
  3. Suffering helps us to identify more with the heart of God rather than the pleasures of the flesh.
  4. Suffering allows us to more deeply appreciate all the promises of the Gospel, especially the promise, “I will never leave or forsake you.”
  5. Suffering draws us closer to Jesus Christ, who suffered for you.

A kind of Lamenting that is Spiritual

Sermon Notes:

Lamentations 3: 1, 19-23, 31-43

I.    Expressing Grief to God and others can be spiritual. 1, 19,20, 43-48

II.   God is the beginning, end, and middle of your grief . . .

        and your hope. 1-9, 10-16, 37-38

III. Expressing Hope during loss is also deeply spiritual. 19-26, 40-41

For those who lament

  • Recognize the difference between complaining and expressing grief

  • Honesty does mean you may say anything and everything

  • While it feels counter-intuitive, you need others

  • You are changing, but you are not alone.

For those who listen to laments

  • Listen– (relentlessly pursue understanding) with compassion

  • Ask Questions

  • Be Patient

  • Get others involved

  • Recognize their needs.  Listening to you may not be a need they have

  • When you do speak, don't say . . .

    I know how you feel
I have experienced the same thing

The Blessing of God in the Sufferings of Life

Sermon Notes:
I. THE BLESSINGS OF LIFE

1In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.  2He had seven sons and three daughters,  3and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.  Job 1:1-3

 II. THE FRAILTY OF LIFE

8Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”  9“Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied.  10“Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.  11But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”  Job 1:8-11

 III. THE PURPOSE OF LIFE

20At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship  21and said:  “Naked I came from my mother’s womb,  and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away;  may the name of the LORD be praised.” 22In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.  Job 1:20-22

9His wife said to him, “Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!”  10He replied, “You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”  In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.  Job 2:9-10

The Wide & Narrow Way
“Enter through the narrow gate.

Sermon Notes:
For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.  But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life,
and only a few find it.
Matthew 7:13-14

The Doctrine of HELL
(1) Sheol or “the grave” is used in the Old Testament to mean the place of the dead, generally thought to be under the earth.

(2) Hades is the Greek word for the underworld, the realm of the dead. It is the word used in the New Testament for Sheol.

Revelation 20:13-14
The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done.  14Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.

(3) Gehenna, or hell, was named after the Valley of Hinnom near Jerusalem where children were sacrificed by fire to the pagan gods (see 2 Kings 23:10; 2 Chronicles 28:3). This is the place of eternal fire (Matthew 5:22; 10:28; Mark 9:43; Luke 12:5; James 3:6; Revelation 19:20) prepared for the devil, his angels, and all those who do not believe in God (Revelation 20:9-10). This is the final and eternal state of the wicked after the resurrection and the Last Judgment.  When Jesus warns against unbelief, he is trying to save us from agonizing punishment.

Matthew 10:28
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Matthew 5:29 - 30
If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.   30And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

Matthew 23:15
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.

Matthew 25:41
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Revelation 20: 11-15
11Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. 14Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Luke 16:19-31   (The rich man and Lazarus)
·      Hell may be in your future, even if you are presently prospering.

·      Hell is a place of eternal torment and agony.

·      Hell is a place without hope.

·      Hell can be avoided.

III.    QUESTIONS ABOUT HELL

1. Isn’t hell just a scare tactic invented by the church to keep people in line?

2. Isn’t hell just a symbolic term?

3. Won’t God give people a second chance to avoid going to hell?

4. What about those who don’t know Christ through no fault of their own?

5. Should we fear hell?

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.  Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’  Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’  Matthew 7:21-23

Christ Authority in His Ascension

Sermon Notes

17I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

18I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,  19and his incomparably great power for us who believe.

That power is like the working of his mighty strength,  20which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,  21far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

22And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,  23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.  Ephesians 1:17-23

Love That Could Not Be Extinguished

Click on the orange file name above to download to your computer.

Sermon Notes

1 John 4:7-21

Love is More Powerful than Hate

7Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.  8Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

Life is More Powerful than Death

9This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.  10This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Faith is More Powerful than Fear

12No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us…. 18There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

Submitting To One Another Part Two

Sermon Notes

Ephesians 5:21-33

I.  Children: OBEY
1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—
“that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

II. Father: TEACH
4Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

III.  Slaves: SERVE

5Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.  6Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart.  7Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men,  8because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.

 IV.   Masters: VALUE
9And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.

Submitting To One Another

Click on the orange file name above to download to your computer.

Sermon Notes

Ephesians 5:21-33

I. Submission
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

II. Wives & Husbands
Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

III. Husbands & Wives
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

IV. Christ & the Church
After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body. "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Finding Out What Pleases The Lord

Sermon Notes

Ephesians 5:8-20

1.___________________________________________
8   For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)

2.___________________________________________
11  Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14for it is light that makes everything visible.

3. ______________________________________________
“Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

4. _____________________________________________
15  Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making
the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

5.  _____________________________________________
17  Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

6.  _____________________________________________
18   Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead,
be filled with the Spirit.

7.  _____________________________________________
19  Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord,

8.  _____________________________________________

Former Adversaries in the Community

Click on the orange file name above to download to your computer.

Sermon Notes

Ephesians 3:1-13

Thesis: The key that brings former adversaries into community is Christ

I. Paul Receives Revelation from God

1For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles— 2Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you,  3that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly.  4In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ,  5which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets.  6This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.7I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power.  Ephesians 3:1-7 ( NIV )

II. We Share in Preaching Paul's Gospel 8Although I am less than the least of all God’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,  9and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.  10His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms,  11according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.  12In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.   Ephesians 3:8-12 ( NIV )

III. Believers Suffer because of the Gospel

13I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory. Ephesians 3:13 ( NIV )

A Fragrant Offering of Jesus Christ

Click on the orange file name above to download to your computer.

Sermon Notes

     Ephesians 5:1-7
I.           A Fragrant Offering

Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children  2and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

 II.          A Holy People

3But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.  4Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.

III.         The Wrath of God

5For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God  6Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient.  7Therefore do not be partners with them.

     III. Speaking Truth in Love

29Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
